WHAT WE ARE

We are a botanic garden of trees just 12 kilometres south of Devonport in Tasmania and only a one hour drive from Launceston. The Tasmanian Arboretum is a collection of trees of the temperate world in a beautiful and peaceful landscape. Within the 66 ha park sits the natural heritage of the Eugenana limestone beds and the marks of colonial and early Federation industrial endeavour. View our brochure.

We are open every day of the year. Further, during the warmer months (early September to the beginning of June), the Tree Park Kiosk is open 11:00 am to 4:00 pm every day to serve tea, coffee, hot chocolate, light refreshments or some of that legendary home made ice-cream. Please click here to read the Arboretum's response to the covid-19 pandemic

From flowers in spring through the shade of summer to autumn colours and the patterns of winter, we invite you to enjoy a visit to our collections of cool climate woody plants.

WHAT WE offer

We have the world's largest collection of Tasmanian living woody plants, Southern Hemisphere Conifers, and plants from northern hemisphere forests in an extensive park of around 66ha.

We are currently the best place in Australia (ref Australian Platypus Monitoring Network) to see Platypus like this (and this) in the wild. They can reliably be seen most days in Founder's Lake and at any time of the day. Around 80 bird species have been recorded and plenty of other wildlife are also present.

Within the 66 ha grounds of the Arboretum can be seen open parklands, hills with original forest, limestone outcrops, a lake, creek and river.

how we do it

volunteering

The Tasmanian Arboretum has been developed by the local community with extensive volunteer input showing what can be achieved from a vision. It is due to the ongoing efforts of such volunteers that the Arboretum continues to thrive and develop today.

Opening & admission

Our gates are open every day of the year.
Our opening hours are:
October to April - 9:00 am to 8:00 pm
May to September - 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.
We have toilets with disabled access and plenty of parking. Admission is $5 per adult, or by becoming a member.

Conditions of entry

The Arboretum is owned by its members. We depend on volunteers for much of our work and the support of the community for much of our funding. We hold a living collection of plants, each one of them important to us, please respect them. The site is also a Wildlife Sanctuary (Land for Wildlife). For these reasons we ask that you observe our Conditions of Entry.

Disabled access

Disabled may drive, or be driven, around Sylvan Circuit. There is a Platypus Observatory with a ramp and carpark (beware of soft edges where the land is flat). Alongside the carpark is a rotunda with BBQs and tables with toilets neaby. All facilitate people with disabilities (except perhaps the BBQs). The Sylvan Circuit may be suitable for motorized wheelchairs but the surface is gravel, like the carpark.
