Founded in 1846 by Spanish Benedictine monks, New Norcia is Australia's only monastic town. The New Norcia Museum tells the story of the town's time as an Aboriginal Mission, the centre of a vast farming enterprise and a place of education and culture. Everything is on display, including gifts from the Queen of Spain to the founder's gold teeth.
The Art gallery upstairs houses one of the finest collections of religious art in Australia, from Spanish and Italian old masters to contemporary. Guided tours are offered twice daily and take visitors into many of the town's magnificent buildings. New Norcia continues to be the home of a living Community of Benedictine monks and there is opportunity to join them for prayers.
Special Exhibit: The Raphael Room features the famous work "Head of an Apostle" by Raphael.
