Beaconsfield’s Grubb Shaft Gold & Heritage Museum, was opened to the public in 1984 and has grown significantly to become an attraction of state significance. The Museum is housed in two of the three brick buildings built by the Tasmania Gold Mine Company in 1904/1905. The National Trust and the Australian Heritage Commission have now classified them as significant, and now there is the added bonus of a working gold mine right next door which creates a great deal of interest and speculation. A dedicated and knowledgeable band of volunteers welcome visitors from all over the world and assist in the maintenance of current exhibits and the development of new ones. Staff at “Grubb Shaft” pride themselves in being able to offer something of interest for the whole family – social history displays of early Beaconsfield and the surrounding district, over 30 visitor-activated working models, steam and rural machinery, learning games for children, local mineral displays, a waterwheel-powered stamp battery
